OUR STORY
Windham Millwork was founded here in Windham, Maine by my father, Walter Pulkkinen, in 1957. We have been at the same site for over 50 years, successfully upholding the ideals established by our founder during his ownership of the company.
During the early years the company focused heavily on the woodwork and cabinetry required in schools, hospitals, colleges, and other institutional settings….44 years later our core business remains the same. During this time we have continued to foster the ideals and philosophies introduced by dad, "We will achieve 100% total customer satisfaction for every product we sell. We will be relentless in the pursuit of that goal and will never vary from the principles of customer satisfaction…quality, value, and company image."
Walter Pulkkinen surrounded himself with quality people like Everett McKenny, his plant manager for the first 19 years, and Walter Johnson, his head designer. During the 1960's the company employed approximately 20 people and operated out of about 15,000 square feet of space. As the business grew, Walter saw the need for additional production space and added approximately 12,000 square feet in 1968.
In the late 1970's dad began his plans for retirement, and in 1980 sold the company to Walter Johnson and myself. From 1980 to 1987 we grew from a company with $700,000 in sales and about 20 people, to a company doing over $4,200,000 in sales and about 40 people. Along about this time we reached the plant's capacity and added an additional 12,000 square feet to house our moulding and milling operations.
We managed to survive the early 90's recession and hit the ground running as the economy turned upward. We have experienced steady growth for the past several years. In 1998 we once again expanded our facility. In addition to this expansion we purchased two adjoining properties to house our laminating line and expand our raw material storage.

Today, we are a company housed in a 64,000-square-foot facility with state of the art machinery; however, our most vital assets are the folks we employ here…they are the heart and soul of this company and they are the ones who carry on the traditions and ideals introduced by my dad those 44 years ago. We were one of the first Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI) members to achieve Premium Grade Certification for all the products and services we provide. |

Our key managers and craftsmen have an average industry experience of over 20 years and I am confident that they will provide the high quality products and service that even the most discerning client might expect from their woodwork provider. In recent years, we have performed over 400 commercial projects including the $1.2 million dollar "Midcoast Hospital," the "Maine State Senate Chambers," and UNUM Corporation's HO3 expansion.
If you are a customer today, I thank you for the business…if you are a potential customer I would like to thank you in advance for the chance to partner with you on your next project.
Have a nice day,
Bruce W. Pulkkinen
